Amputations are most frequent in lower extremities. Internationally, landmines are the dominant cause of amputation and effects, as with other injuries, mainly young people. In the industrial world the majority of amputations are a consequence of impaired blood circulation in elderly. Tumours and congenital deformities can also be the cause of amputation.

Rehabilitation of amputated patients current technology

Traditionally amputees are rehabilitated with socket prostheses. Socket prostheses are difficult to satisfactorily secure and often causes skin problems.

Bone anchored amputation prostheses – new technology

Bone anchored prostheses are attached directly to the bone and do not have any contact with the skin. Many of the prosthesis related problems are eliminated and the functional ability of the patient is improved.

Core technology – osseointegration

Integrum’s implant system OPRA for the direct bone anchorage of amputation prostheses is based on the principle of osseointegration, which has been developed by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark in Gothenburg. Osseointegration implies direct contact between a titanium implant and living bone tissue. The method has been in clinical use for prosthetic replacement of teeth since 1965, and more than 800000 patients have been treated.

Product and treatment

Integrum’s implant system OPRA consists of an anchoring element (fixture) which is surgically inserted into the bone of the amputation stump. After approximately six months a skin penetrating connection component (abutment) is attached to the fixture. The patient’s prosthesis is then attached to the outer part of the abutment.

The treatment is performed by a team consisting of orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and prosthetists. Since 1990 over 40 patients have been treated with an osseointegrated implant system.

Target group

The OPRA implant system is primarily intended for use in rehabilitation of younger, above knee amputees.
